When the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) came out, it brought with itself numerous new games. But there were already countless fans of the games of Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) who did not want to let go of their beloved games. This is why Sony made the intelligent move of making PS3 back-compatible with PS2 games i.e. players could use and play the PS2 game discs on the PS3 as well. However this is no longer possible. But hackers and players and continuously working out a way that lets you play Sony PS2 games on PS3. One of the latest ways hackers have come up with is completely software based.
Before understanding the significance of this software based hack, you must first understand how the original PS3 was able to play those old PS2 games. The original PS3 came with additional hardware installed that enabled it to understand PS2 game discs and let you play them. Later models and firmware updates disabled this featured and did not have support for PS2 games – certainly a bad move by Sony.
But soon afterwards, hackers were able to figure out a way to bring the PS2 functionality back to the PS3. This was achieved through the help of an additional hardware add-on: the Cobra-USB Dongle.
So you see, the only way the PS3 could support PS2 games was through some form of additional hardware. But this has now been changed thanks to the software-only hack that equips your PS3 with PS2 functionality.
The how-to for this hack is extremely simple.
Step 1: Download the hack archive titled “p3dwik-ps2compatfiles.rar” from here.
Step 2: Copy the files in the archive over the files you find in your console’s /dev_flash/ directory.
Step 3: Go into your console’s Factory Service Mode.
Step 4: Insert a PS2 game disc and begin playing.
As with any other modification to your device, this hack carries risk and you should apply it at your own risk. The hack also does not work for all PS2 games. So proceed with caution.
